Greenhouse Rack and Pinion Set, Made to Drawing

product-1600-1600

A rack and its mating pinion produced together in one facility, with tooth form verified as a pair before dispatch. Supplied for greenhouse vent drive lines as a standard configuration or manufactured to your drawing or sample.

Why the Set Matters More Than the Parts

A rack and a pinion bought separately are two correct components that may still not work together. Tooth form has to agree on module, pressure angle and profile. Two suppliers each meeting their own specification can produce a pair that meshes on the tooth tips instead of across the flank - and that failure does not show up on the bench. It shows up in the second season, when teeth start breaking under wind load.

The practical value of ordering a set is that the verification happens in our facility rather than on your installation. The pinion is checked against the rack it will actually run with, not against a drawing of a rack.

This matters more in horticultural facilities than in most industrial applications, because the failure mode is expensive out of proportion to the part. A stripped rack tooth on a roof vent means the vent stays open or stays shut, and either state can cost a crop before anyone gets a ladder to it.

What the Set Covers

Rack and Pinion Set - Scope of Supply

Toothed rack

Linear or arc form, galvanized steel

Mating pinion

Involute spur, tooth form matched to the rack

Pinion housing / support

Supplied where required by the drive arrangement

Bore and keyway

Machined to your drive shaft

Fixing holes

Drilled to your mounting pattern

Module / tooth pitch

Specified per order - please advise or send sample

Rack length or arc geometry

Made to drawing

Shaft diameter

Made to drawing

Where a project needs the complete drive line rather than the conversion point alone, we also manufacture the sprockets, roller chain, timing pulleys and timing belts that make up the rest of it.

Manufacturing Process

1. Geometry Confirmation

Before anything is cut, we confirm the tooth geometry against your existing components. Where a sample is available this is a direct measurement; where only a drawing exists we confirm module, pressure angle and shaft interface in writing before proceeding. Guessing at this stage is what produces parts that arrive and do not fit.

2. Rack Production

Teeth are cut to the confirmed profile. For arc-form racks the teeth are generated on the finished curve rather than formed into it afterwards, which keeps pitch consistent along the segment.

3. Pinion Production

The pinion is produced against the same tooth data, with bore and keyway machined to your shaft rather than to a house standard.

4. Paired Verification

Rack and pinion are checked together. Tooth contact and backlash are assessed as an assembly, not as two separate inspections against paper.

5. Surface Protection

Galvanizing is applied after machining. Coating specification follows the installation environment - a coastal facility and an inland one are not given the same treatment by default.

6. Packing

Packed to suit the shipment. Where a set forms part of a larger consolidated order with other transmission components, packing is planned around the container rather than per line item.

Tolerance and Backlash

Backlash is the clearance between meshing teeth. It has to exist - a pair with zero backlash binds as soon as temperature changes or the mounting deflects under load. It also cannot be excessive, or the vent develops lost motion at each reversal and the sash position stops tracking the controller.

Appropriate backlash depends on module, operating temperature range and how accurately the mounting holds centre distance. In a greenhouse the mounting is steelwork erected on site, so centre distance varies more than it would on a machine frame, and the backlash allowance has to account for that.

We set this against your application rather than to a fixed figure. If your drawing specifies a backlash requirement we work to it; if not, we will propose one based on the mounting arrangement and confirm before production.

Customization Workflow

Send what you have - drawing, sample, or dimensioned photographs against a steel rule

We confirm geometry in writing - module, tooth count, arc or length, bore, keyway, hole pattern

Quotation issued against the confirmed specification, with MOQ and lead time

First-article sample produced for your approval where the geometry is new

You fit the sample to the actual mechanism and confirm

Batch production proceeds against the approved article

Step five is the one customers sometimes want to skip to save two weeks. On a new geometry we would rather you did not - fitting one part is how a misunderstanding gets caught while it still costs one part.

Applications

Roof vent drive lines in commercial glasshouses

Sidewall ventilation in multi-span horticultural facilities

Screen and shading drive systems

Replacement sets for mechanisms where rack and pinion have worn as a pair

OEM supply to greenhouse equipment manufacturers

Where the vent geometry requires an arc-form rack rather than a linear one, see our curved rack segments.

When to Replace Both Rather Than One

A worn rack running with a worn pinion has, over thousands of cycles, worn into a matched pair. Replacing only one puts a new profile against a worn one, and contact concentrates on whichever part is still sharp. The new component then wears faster than the original ever did.

Where both components show wear, replacing them as a set is usually the shorter path. Diagnosing which symptoms indicate this is covered in our guide to common vent drive faults.

FAQ

Q: Can you produce a set from a worn sample?
Yes, though we measure the least worn areas of the tooth flank rather than the contact zone. Where the pinion is in better condition than the rack, we take the geometry from the pinion.

Q: Do you supply the gear motor as well?
No. We manufacture the mechanical transmission components - racks, pinions, sprockets, chain, pulleys, belts, linear guides and ball screws. Motors are sourced separately.

Q: What bore sizes can you machine?
Bore and keyway are machined per order to your drive shaft. Send the shaft diameter and keyway dimensions with your enquiry.

Q: How long does a first-article sample take?
Depends on whether tooling for the geometry exists. Confirmed with the quotation rather than quoted as a blanket figure.

Q: Can a set be supplied with other transmission parts in one shipment?
Yes, and it is usually the cheaper route on freight. Sprockets, chain, pulleys and belts are produced in the same facility and consolidate into one shipment.

Q: Is a drawing required to order?
No. A physical sample or dimensioned photographs are workable inputs. What we do require is that the geometry is confirmed in writing before cutting.

Why Source From Our Factory

Both halves from one facility. Tooth compatibility is verified as an assembly, which is the failure mode that splitting the order across two suppliers introduces.

Source factory, not a trading intermediary. Geometry questions are answered by the people cutting the teeth.

Twenty years in transmission components. Gears, racks, sprockets, roller chain, timing pulleys, timing belts, linear guides and ball screws.

OEM and standard parts both accepted. Working from drawings and samples is routine work here.

First-article approval available. On new geometry you confirm a physical part before batch production commits.

Request a Quotation

Specifying a rack and pinion set for a greenhouse ventilation project?

Send us the module or tooth pitch, rack length or arc geometry, drive shaft diameter and keyway, mounting hole pattern and quantity. We will confirm the full specification in writing before quoting.

Replacing a worn set? Send the old rack and pinion, or photographs of both against a steel rule, and we will identify the geometry and confirm whether a direct match is possible.
