Big Lead Ball Screws - When Travel Speed Matters More Than Resolution

A pick-and-place head has to cross 600 mm and come back, several thousand times a shift. Run that on a 5 mm lead screw and the motor spends its life at high rpm just to move the axis at a usable rate. The screw is working hard, the bearings are working hard, and the cycle time is still mediocre.

This is what big lead screws are for. A 16 mm shaft with a 16 mm lead moves the nut 16 mm per revolution instead of 5 mm - three times the travel for the same motor speed.

The trade-off is real and worth stating up front: coarser lead means lower positioning resolution per motor step and lower mechanical advantage. Big lead is the right answer for transfer, handling, and long-stroke positioning. It is the wrong answer for a grinding axis.

SFY Series - One-Stage

Model Shaft Ø Lead Ball Ø Nut Ø Flange Ø Nut Length Weight
SPY1616-3-6 16 16 2.778 32 53 45 0.238 kg
SPY2020-3-6 20 20 3.175 39 62 52 0.380 kg
SPY2525-3-6 25 25 3.969 47 74 64 0.652 kg
SPY3232-3-6 32 32 4.762 58 92 78 1.168 kg
SPY4040-3-6 40 40 6.350 73 114 99 2.288 kg
SPY5050-3-6 50 50 7.938 90 135 117 4.120 kg

Dimensions in mm. Note that lead equals shaft diameter across this range - a 1:1 ratio that makes the series easy to size mentally.

SFY Series - Two-Stage

Where even more travel per revolution is needed, the two-stage variants double the lead again:

Model Shaft Ø Lead Ball Ø Nut Ø Flange Ø Nut Length Weight
SPY1622-1-6 16 32 2.778 32 53 62.5 0.222 kg
SPY2040-1-6 20 40 3.175 39 62 48 0.348 kg
SPY2560-1-6 25 50 3.969 47 74 58 0.596 kg
SPY3284-1-6 32 64 4.762 58 92 71 1.066 kg
SPY4080-1-6 40 80 6.350 73 114 90 2.096 kg
SPY50100-1-6 50 100 7.938 90 135 111 3.818 kg

Dimensions in mm. Left-hand thread available on request.

A SPY50100 moves 100 mm per revolution. At 600 rpm that is 60 metres per minute - but check the critical speed and DN limits for your unsupported length before assuming the axis can actually run there.

What You Give Up

Three things change when you move to a coarse lead, and it is better to know them before the quote than after commissioning:

Resolution drops proportionally. With a 1605 screw and a 1000-count encoder you resolve 5 µm per count. Swap to a 1616 and the same encoder gives you 16 µm. If your positioning spec is tight, the motor and drive have to make up the difference.

Thrust drops for the same motor torque. Lead acts like a gear ratio. Tripling the lead roughly thirds the axial force available from the same torque. On a vertical axis this matters twice over - once for lifting capacity, once for holding.

Back-driving becomes easier. A coarse-lead screw is far less self-locking than a fine one. On a vertical axis, assume it will back-drive when power is removed and design in a brake. This is not a defect; it is physics, and it catches people out regularly.

Where It Fits

Applications where our customers use big lead screws:

  • Pick-and-place and gantry transfer heads
  • Palletising and case-packing axes
  • Long-stroke positioning where the move dominates the cycle
  • Tool changers and shuttle mechanisms
  • Automated storage and retrieval

Applications where a standard lead is usually the better choice: grinding, die-sinking, metrology stages, any vertical axis carrying significant load without a brake, and anything where positioning tolerance is tighter than a few tens of microns.

Support and Matching

Big lead screws use the same BK/BF, FK/FF and EK/EF support unit families as standard screws. The shaft ends are machined to your drawing in the same way.

One point specific to this series: because these screws typically run at higher linear speeds, the unsupported length and end support configuration deserve a closer look than usual. Tell us the stroke and the traverse rate you are targeting and we will check the numbers against the screw before quoting.

What to Send Us

  1. Required traverse speed and acceleration
  2. Stroke and total shaft length
  3. Moving mass and axis orientation
  4. Positioning tolerance you need to hold
  5. Motor type and available torque, if already selected
  6. Quantity

If you tell us the cycle you are trying to hit rather than the part number you think you need, we can often suggest a lead that gets there with a smaller motor.

Manufacturing

Tianjin OuNaiDa has produced precision transmission components since 2008 - 20 years of manufacturing and 15 years of export experience, supplying over 300 overseas distributors, to CE and ISO 9001:2015 standards.

We supply the complete linear axis: ball screws, support units, shaft couplings, and linear guideways, with shaft-end machining matched across the set.

OEM and ODM accepted. Samples available. Technical support 24 hours.
