Miniature Ball Screws - SFK Series from Ø4 to Ø16

Desktop equipment, medical devices, semiconductor handling, optical stages, small test rigs. The axis needs to position accurately, but the whole machine fits on a bench and there is no room for a 16 mm screw and a pair of BK blocks.

The SFK series starts at 4 mm shaft diameter with a 1 mm lead, and the smallest units weigh 24 grams. These are not scaled-down standard screws - the nut design, ball circuit count, and load ratings are specific to the miniature range.

Note the flange: the smaller models (SFK0401 through SFK1002, plus SFK1202 and SFK1402) use a compact nut body without a bolted flange interface, while SFK1004 and SFK1602 carry M6 flange mounting. Confirm which interface your bracket expects before ordering.

Choosing a Lead in the Miniature Range

Most of the range is 1 mm or 2 mm lead, which is the point - fine lead gives fine resolution, and these axes are usually about positioning rather than speed.

Two exceptions worth knowing: SFK0803.5 (3.5 mm lead on an 8 mm shaft) and SFK1004 (4 mm lead on a 10 mm shaft). Both give noticeably more travel per revolution in a small package, useful when a compact axis still has to move a reasonable distance within the cycle.

What Changes at This Scale

Miniature screws behave differently from their larger relatives in ways that surprise people coming down from standard sizes.

Ball diameter is tiny. At 0.8 mm, the balls are sensitive to contamination that a 3.175 mm ball would roll straight over. A single metal chip that would be harmless in a 1605 can mark the raceway here. Keep the assembly area clean and consider a bellows or cover if the environment is not.

Torque is low, so friction is proportionally significant. Drag torque that would be negligible on a 32 mm screw can be a meaningful fraction of your motor's output at 4 mm. Do not over-preload, and do not over-grease.

Alignment tolerance is tighter in absolute terms. A 0.05 mm misalignment across a short miniature axis represents a much larger angular error than the same 0.05 mm across a 1 metre screw. Mounting surfaces need to be properly machined, not shimmed by feel.

Shaft ends are delicate. A 4 mm shaft with a machined journal has very little material left. Handle with care during assembly and do not use the shaft end as a lever when fitting bearings.

Support Units

The small end of the support unit range matches these screws: EK05 and EK06 for 5–6 mm journals, EK08 for 8 mm, EK10 and EK12 for 10–12 mm, with matching EF supported-end units. FK/FF round flange types are available across the same sizes where a flange interface suits the frame better.

For the smallest screws, the support unit is often physically larger than the screw nut. Plan the layout around the support blocks, not the screw.

Typical Applications

  • Benchtop automation and desktop CNC
  • Medical and laboratory equipment
  • Semiconductor and electronics handling
  • Optical and camera positioning stages
  • Test and measurement fixtures
  • Small dispensing and inspection heads

What to Send Us for a Quotation

  1. Shaft diameter and lead - or the resolution you need to hold
  2. Stroke and total shaft length
  3. Load, and whether the axis is horizontal or vertical
  4. Mounting interface - flanged nut or plain nut body
  5. Shaft-end drawing, or the support units you plan to use
  6. Environment - clean room, general workshop, or exposed
  7. Quantity

For prototype and low-volume work, tell us the quantity honestly. Miniature screws are often needed in ones and twos for a development build, and that is fine - we would rather quote a sample correctly than lose a project over a minimum order assumption.

Manufacturing

Tianjin OuNaiDa has produced precision transmission components since 2008 - 20 years of manufacturing and 15 years of export experience across 300+ overseas distributors, to CE and ISO 9001:2015 standards.

Alongside miniature screws we supply the matched support units, shaft couplings, and miniature linear guideways to complete a compact axis.

OEM and ODM accepted. Samples available. Technical support 24 hours.
